Children of the After: Awakening, Revelation, Evolution Book #1 #2 #3 by Jeremy Laszlo Book Reviews

Children of the After: Awakening
Children of the After: Revelation #2
Children of the After: Evolution #3
 by Jeremy Laszlo

I was lucky to get book 1 when it was free on Amazon UK and have been hooked on this series ever since; plus I thought Id keep the whole series together in one large review as they are so quick to read being novellas.

Blurb
It has been six months since their father locked them in the security vault with a promise to return. But he never came back. With supplies running out and vital life support systems failing, Jack, Samantha, and Will have no choice but to ignore their father’s warnings and leave the vault. With no knowledge of what befell the world outside, or what they might expect once the door is opened, they find themselves in a world they do not recognize.

Thrust into the remains of the world they remember, how will they survive on their own, not knowing what or who else remains amongst the ruins?

I dont often read Young adult books but there was something about the blurb that caught my imagination and attention and the book was FREE what had I to lose.

I read this book in one sitting as its in between a novel and novella and I simply couldn't put it down. Its perfect for the teens but some adults may enjoy this too. I loved the 3 separate characters of the kids and showing so clearly the different ages. Its well written and has brilliant character development as the kids have to to start fending for themselves. We watch them grow as scared children to becoming pretty sensible when needed even the youngest Will whose 14 year old sister Sam has taken to her "Mum" role perfectly and Jack is the brilliant older brother we all want to have.
I love the extremely close bond they have between them and Jeremy most certainly has experience with kids to write with such detailed and childhood understanding. The childlike terminology brings this book together and kids will love this read....all wanting to be Jack Im sure.

Locked in their home's vault by their Dad for safety, running out of food they have to leave before they starve; and to their shock discover utter devastation; their home and city destroyed but who is following them; who is the older man on a horse and the even stranger monkey-like beings?

I would have loved for this to have been much longer as I prefer novels and getting completely immersed into a read. I finished this compelling read within 2.5 hours and went onto buy the second immediately as I simply NEED to know what happens next as it ends on a sort of cliffhanger.
A good start to this series and I'm now off to download book 2...watch this space!

Having learned of the destruction of their world, Jack, Sam, and Will are forced to flee the security of their Grandparent’s home with blood thirsty beasts hot on their trail. Leaving the dark rider and the answers he likely had behind, they again are forced to fend for themselves as they are pursued relentlessly.

It isn't until they begin to see signs of life that hope is rekindled, but with the beasts gaining on them, will they reach what surely must be salvation, or will they fall victim to the creatures that destroyed the world they once knew.

Book 2 of this series is an even faster paced read than the first which I actually enjoyed more.
Will Jack Sammy find Tammy a mute friend who saves their lives several times.
Finding the safety of a resistance camp they discover more about her and the aliens attacking.

Despite being a teen read I actually enjoyed this more than the first book and I whisked through this read in under 3 hours thoroughly enjoying the unexpected twists and turns although like other reviewers I wish it were longer.
The story has really grown on me and is so intriguing. Its been written with such a realistic child's point of view which will really appeal to the kids out there. I would say its definitely a teen read but some adults may still enjoy it like me as Jeremy has created a good balance between teen and adult reads.
I'm loving the realistic character development of the three kids; especially Will who is having to grow up fast. The author is clearly a parent as he's nailed the different reactions from the kids and how they deal with things slightly differently according to age.
Tammy is a fab new character and not only is she great for girl power; the author is making a valid point that just because someone is different it doesn't mean they are bad...showing humans can be cruel with things they don't understand....high five Mr Laszlo.

What makes this read slightly different from other alien reads is the fact they are dealing with a variety of aliens not just the one; plus you don't know if its an alien standing next to you.....
The gore and horror is toned down quite a bit as a teen read; but the excellent storyline makes up for this. I hope Mr Laszlo will turn to more adult novels as I personally prefer more horror and gore but I love his writing style. I did however chose to download these books already knowing it was YA.
Overall another compelling, engaging read and I cant wait for book 3.

Now off to checkout Book 3!

Children of the after: Evolution #3
 by Jeremy Laszlo

Blurb
Having stolen the pickup, Ole Bessy, from the Resistance, Jack, Samantha, and Will find themselves on the run once again. Pursued by those who had once kept them as captives, they are forced to flee into the unknown.

Now that Tammy’s secret has been exposed, she reveals to her friends a prophecy of her people, further complicating the web of fate the siblings find themselves in.

Finding both new allies and new foes, revealed secrets will lead them all to ‘The City of Angels’ to face the ultimate threat by the invaders themselves.

Being a complete apocalypse junkie I powered through Evolution book 3 after enjoying the other 2 so much; but annoyingly didn't find it as compelling as the first two in the series. But Im sure this is just a slight slow down maybe ready for book 4? I understand you cant keep up the fast pace or it could get too samely.

Saying that I thoroughly enjoyed the three kids practicing their new superpowers and I'm really loving little Will's brilliantly developing character. Its wonderful to see him becoming a huge part in keeping the group safe especially his new pet....!

Just to say Im well above the age group of this series...eeep...young at heart though...but still enjoyed this read and will be reading book 4 ASAP hoping its picked up!

Author Bio

First and foremost I am a father and a husband. I work full time as a civilian employed by the US army, and have also been known as a welder, electrician, carpenter, roofer, writer, painter, CNC machinist, and amongst many other things a romantic. I also belong to the eternal fraternal brotherhood of the United States Marine Corps, having served 8 years that showed me a much broader perspective of the world at large serving in Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, The war on Terrorism, and the humanitarian effort in Liberia.

I currently live in southern Louisiana with my wife and children, though I grew up in Michigan, graduating high school in Mason MI. I also spent time living in North Carolina, Florida, and California during my time in the United States Marine Corps. I have always dreamed of publishing my work, and seeing it on a bookshelf in a store, however with the huge shift to digital media I finally realized that the dream was in my own hands. I tell my children that they can live their dreams, and I believe in leading by example.

I enjoy writing across several different genres from poetry, to children's stories, to full epic fantasies. Creating new characters for my readers to connect with, new worlds for them to immerse themselves in, and new ideas to wrap their minds around is an amazing if not humbling experience. I hope that all my readers can take something away from each of my books, and enjoy reading them just as much as I have enjoyed putting them in print.

Prior to writing this novel, I hadn't published a single thing my own girls could read. It was with that in mind that this new series was created, and I couldn't write this first novel fast enough for them. They were ravenous in its consumption, reading each chapter right after I had it completed. It feels like a wonderful achievement to create something your children appreciate and enjoy. Inspiring a child's imagination is the most humbling thing in the entire world, for they are unrestrained and can see what others miss. Thank you all for your wonderful support and feedback. I hope you have all enjoyed reading this first installment as much as I have in writing it.

The Wrath of the Just (Apocalypse Z #3) By Manel Loureiro Book Review

By Manel Loureiro

Blurb
From apocalypse…
An act of terrorism unleashed an unspeakable biological weapon…and hell on earth. But as the masses felled by a hideous virus rose from the dead to prey on the living, a small band of survivors defied death, and its ghastly spawn—determined to outrun the world’s end, and somehow begin again.
To Armageddon…

But beyond the undead-besieged shores of Europe lies something closer to damnation than salvation. Rescued from certain death at sea, the young Spanish lawyer, the beautiful woman he loves, and his brash, battle-hardened best friend—who have weathered the worst of the unnatural disaster—find themselves delivered from a world of horror into a stronghold of hate. In a United States ravaged by the zombie plague and overrun by the undead, only Gulfport, Mississippi offers sanctuary…for a price: subservience to a fascist dictator and his brutal enforcers. But their reign of terror will soon be challenged. By rebels hungry for vengeance, and invaders bent on conquest.

Hiya apocalyptic lovers yes Ive yet another zombie fueled book for you to read and yet another 5 star one too.
I read the last 2 books in this trilogy over a year ago and since then have read loads of zombie books in-between; so I wondered if I should have read them quickly again to remind myself of the plot with my awful memory. I needn't have worried as soon as having read the the first few pages I was straight back on track as though I'd only read the other books yesterday!
Its now 06.15am Ive been reading since 01.30 and Ive just put it down I simply couldn't stop reading this brilliant last in the series...sniff...sniff!

You would think after reading so many zombie-esk books Id be bored fedup...but no...seriously...I love reading them so much.

So the last in the trilogy takes us back to the diary style read of our favorite zombie killer/lawyer and the tough and lovable Ukrainian helicopter pilot Viktor “Prit” Pritchenko and the beautiful distraction from the chaos Lucia; who have fallen in love with each other despite a 10 year age gap. But I think apocalypse happenings throws all rules out the window don't you, if they love each other go for it!
Plus my favorite character and what any zombie apocalypse needs a Persian ginger cat called Lucullus! I love this arrogant Persian...phew thank you Manel for not making him meet a quick zombie snack lol ;-)
Another fab, fast flowing read and so different from my other zombie reads, so many unique ideas and twists.
We don't just have zombies to contend with but the North Koreans are on their way too; but not before the 3 reluctant zombie killers and the cat find themselves in more trouble as they are forced from the safety of their boat in a freak storm onto the "safety" of an oil tanker. Relieved to be alive and in the hands of their over friendly rescuers are things too good to be true ...of course...they are...sigh!

From horrific storms to mad preachers, racists and the Nazi thinking "bleeps" who are the worst of humankind; making this a heart-pounding read from page one so you just cant stop reading.
Manel makes you really care for these brilliant characters who have been so well developed and have comes so far in these 3 books. Each book has improved and thrown us into yet another great plot, leading smoothly from one to the other.
A fab twist is that the the CDC have produced not technically a cure; but a drug that can slow the process down and I loved the descriptive narrative of the fungal spreads on the zombies....say no more...urgh!

I really enjoyed this compelling thoroughly well written trilogy and now am completely gutted its ended. Your swept along with so many thrilling twists and turns and gory action scenes. Plus I fell in love with Lucullus the cat how could you not; but Im sure that most cats would have just scarpered off at the first loud bang or scream in the very first book; but Im so glad he didn't.
I would suggest reading the first 2 books before this one so you can really appreciate what this fab little group have been through and get to know them better; but you could still read this as a stand alone read too...if you wanted to.
I will miss this awesome trio and I cant wait to read more books from Manel.

The Last Orphans by N.W. Harris Book Review

By N.W. Harris

I was kindly contacted and offered this young adult book for an honest review from Mr Harris; Id normally say no to YA genre; but after seeing the cover and seeing the young kids were teenagers not 8-9 year old's I changed my mind and was actually intrigued by this book. This is the first time I have been completely swayed just by a cover of a book.
So you can judge a book by its cover sometimes, it worked for me!

Blurb
One horrifying day will change the life of sixteen-year-old Shane Tucker and every other kid in the world.

In a span of mere hours, the entire adult population is decimated, leaving their children behind to fend for themselves and deal with the horrific aftermath of the freak occurrence. As one of the newly made elders in his small town, Shane finds himself taking on the role of caretaker for a large group of juvenile survivors. One who just happens to be Kelly Douglas—an out-of-his-league classmate—who, on any other day, would have never given Shane a second glance.
Together, they begin their quest to find out why all of the adults were slaughtered. What they find is even more horrifying than anything they could have expected—the annihilation of the adults was only the beginning. Shane and his friends are not the unlucky survivors left to inherit this new, messed-up planet. No, they are its next victims. There is an unknown power out there, and it won’t stop until every person in the world is dead.

A spine-tingling adventure that will have you gasping for breath all the way until the last page, The Last Orphans is the first book in an all-new apocalyptic series.

Opinion
I was right to go on instinct wow what a fab read and another alternative twist on zombie reads.
The animals have turned on all adults over the world from cows, horses, dogs right down to killer bees, rats and cockroaches, so if your over 18 just step away from your cute kitten or sleeping puppy right now...slowly now...shush no quick movements!
Sixteen year old Shane Tucker's day couldn't get any worse. His Grans funeral in the morning, arguing with his father and walking out by lunchtime; the skies turning an eerie green and the death of millions of adults over the world...killed by the wildlife and pets around them...leaving all the children of the world to fend for themselves "what a day" is a complete understatement!

I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book being a passionate animal lover as I was guessing it would involve having to kill many cute furry animals; but it was tastefully written and most of the damage was already done...most...I said most!
Shane finds some of his friends who band together to take care of the smaller kids and try to find help and whats going on.

Mr Harris's creative mind gave this unique plot a refreshing twist by bringing in a doomsday machine, Dr Who, Thunderbirds and James Bond style. But its not as easy as just unplug it...oh no people...its in the basement of a government building armed and dangerous and if that's not all...did I mention they are on a time limit...of course they are...!
  • Find the Doomsday machine...check.
  • Get past sadistic gangs...check.
  • Avoid killer robots...check.
  • Watch-out for your friends killing you...check.
  • Watch-out for killer cockroaches/rats...check.
Oh and then turn off machine...hmm...simples...erm...not!!!

I honestly wasn't sure whether Id enjoy this book being a young adult genre as Im..er...over 30...I can feel my nose getting longer...but I was totally engrossed from page one and in some places I was actually holding my breath lol!

I loved how the main characters really develop quickly into thinking like adults and I found them engaging and believable and really started caring and rooting for them.
This is a compelling, action packed, thrilling read with plenty of gore and horror you are swept along without wanting to put this book down till the last page, then your gutted its ended and NEED book 2 NOW it really is that good.

The ending cliffhanger is just brilliant and I can't wait for book two this is genius.
NOTE: The Last orphans would make a brilliant film for any of you producer's out there.
Yay for a zombie breath of fresh air!

Ravage by Iain Rob Wright Book Review

Blurb
FIRST PEOPLE GOT SICK. THEN THEY GOT VERY SICK..
Nick Adams is just a normal guy. He loves his family, appreciates his home, and covets his car. But he absolutely hates his job. Which is what makes it so difficult that not a single customer has come by his store today. It seems as though there’s a bug going around, something that has come out of nowhere and is keeping people at home. Still, it’s probably nothing to worry about. People get sick all the time.

And besides, things are finally starting to look up. Nick’s first customer of the day has just stumbled through the door…

HIS DAY IS ABOUT TO GET WORSE..
It won’t be long before Nick’s entire life is turned upside down, sending him on a frantic journey through a ravaged world that will ultimately lead him 500 feet upwards to a hilltop amusement park. Is it the last safe place on Earth, or are the monsters at the top of the hill even worse than the ones below?

WELCOME TO RIPLEY HEIGHTS. WHERE THE FUN NEVER STARTS.

I have been reading zombie books this year like there's no tomorrow...end of the world...pun intended lol. So certain books stand above the rest in keeping you on your toes; Ravage is one of those. Its extremely fast paced and I couldn't stop turning those digital pages till the end.
I found this book when it was free on Amazon and I have to say I loved it, this is the first Iain Rob Wright book Ive read and I'm now looking into getting the next.
I would always recommend trying new books when they are free as you get read to try new authors which you wouldn't normally read.

Iain writes with gusto and realism; as a group of strangers from all different walks of life find themselves in 2 separate groups which will lead them to Ripley Heights amusement park and zoo high up on a hill away from the town.
At the beginning the book is divided into 2 main groups that we follow, the first group starts in the town.
I immediately related to Nick the phone salesman, likable, funny and just one of us; whose last customer isn't what it seems and he is eventually rescued by Dave the bus driver and a few others he picked up along the way including some escaped prisoners...which is never going to end well is it!

The second group has Annaliese a young vet called to help out a foal being born at Ripley Heights zoo. I really love this tough kick ass no nonsense young woman with a huge love of animals. I can see alot of her in me...yay girl power!
She accidentally encounters some trapped residents of Ripley Heights and helps them escape to safety risking her own life in the process. This group is run by the abrupt power hungry manager Shawcross; who is so dis-likable and you love to hate.
The two groups eventually combine; but its certainly not what it seems; there's thieving, murder and deceit amongst the newly formed group; with strong characters clashing who want to be in charge....god help those who don't follow them.
Iain has produced some brilliant evolving characters that are realistic and believable; plus one of my favorites; Lily a welcome addition to the book who lost her mate and baby too....
I loved the 2 different types of zombie; the infected newly turned who were fast and the walking dead slow lumbering both still deadly.
Iain's creativity throws you into many twists and turns bringing out the worst of human nature and engages you with your favorite characters; its fast paced as you are swept along not knowing who to trust with an unexpected thought provoking ending.

Sector 63: Ambush by Dean M Cole Book Review

Blurb
Independence Day meets The X-Files in this present-day apocalyptic thriller by an award-winning author and combat pilot.

A dizzying chain of events thrust US Air Force fighter pilot Captain Jake Giard into a well-intentioned global conspiracy with extraterrestrial roots. However, as Jake finishes indoctrination into the program, it renders Earth a pawn in a galactic civil war. Within and above Washington DC, Captain Giard and two wingmen fight through a post-apocalyptic hell. On the West Coast, his girlfriend and fellow fighter pilot, Captain Sandra Fitzpatrick, wades through blazing infernos and demented looters in a desperate attempt to save her family. Finally, with the fate of the world in the balance, they take the battle to the enemy, humanity's very survival hanging on their success.

SECTOR 64: Ambush is a full-length professionally edited novel based and expanding on my 2011 novella, Coup de Main, a highly rated 2013 Amazon Breakthrough Novel Awards third-prize recipient.

Opinion
Sector 64: Ambush is an easy, fast paced, unputdownable read of alien invasion and race against time to save the Human race.
Its quite different to alot of books Ive read recently...apart from being no zombies its perfect for those who have a fascination for or who have aviation and flight experience and will certainly appreciate the added detail and knowledge from the author who has had first hand combat air-flight experience. This shows clearly throughout the book; making it even more realistic to us as the reader.
Dean's military experience as a pilot shows right from chapter 1 in the very first flight sequence; as its so realistic you could almost be the co-pilot. I could still understand it even with real military flight terminology.

The humans join forces with the Argonian's to fight against the terrifying Zoxyth who have vaporized millions of the worlds population and its a race against time before more ships arrive to eradicate the human race.
Couple, Captain Sandra Fitzpatrick (Sandy) and Captain Jake Giard are brilliant characters; both engaging and believable;  I enjoyed the character development between them and loved the fact she is an experienced female fighter pilot too; although I wanted her role to be a bit bigger within the plot, fingers crossed for book 2.

This book will certainly appeal to those with a love of not only science fiction/ thrillers/alien invasion- esk books but those who love or have some knowledge of military flying; even though I don't...I still appreciated and loved all this extra information and detail.
I found all the main characters relatable and believable and with brilliant descriptive text you could see that 8 foot high reptilian alien right infront of you...eep! The plot is skillfully woven to a fast paced dramatic ending which leads onto book 2 perfectly cant wait.

Indian Hill 4: From the Ashes by Mark Tufo Book Review

Indian Hill 4: From the Ashes by Mark Tufo

 Blurb
It has been three years since the Progerians left their mark of devastation upon Earth. The remaining humans are in a desperate race against time as they do their best to reverse engineer the alien technology they captured, in an effort to bolster their beleaguered defenses against the oncoming onslaught of Progerians hell-bent on revenge. Revenge against the humans that thwarted their take-over and revenge against the subordinate Genogerians that helped.
Michael Talbot once again finds himself at the forefront to protect all that is sacred to him. He will receive help from some unexpected allies but will it be enough?

Okay before I start...have you read Zombie Fallout or Indian Hill 1-3...then STOP and go and click buy now; you know your gonna love the adventures of Mike Talbot without reading what I think...go on...off you go! ;-)

Mark does it again and I'm sure you are all sick of me raving about his books; I simply cant help it they really are that good. I absolutely loved book 4 in the series and I'm falling in love with Dee almost as much as Mike. The one liners are just genius and Im laughing outloud like a crazy person...lol.
Marks character developments are effortless and I was so excited to find another well loved character introduced to the storyline...woohoo we all love BT and their amazing banter...I suddenly feel Im home again.

This book is 3 years after book 3 and earth is yet again in trouble from the Progerians and I loved how Mike and Tracey this time get to fight together; she really has a huge part in this book and gets to kick some serious alien butt and proving herself to be as bad ass as her hubby. They are a model military couple but they have a new unexpected danger. Beth is becoming more and more jealous and cruel as time goes on; who seems to be successfully turning life-long friend Paul against them.

Were right behind Mike as he tries to integrate the freed Genogerians into our human world ready to fight together against the Progerians; but its never going to be easy is it with Mike.

I seriously cannot wait for Book 5 with another fantastic nail biting ending when all seems lost for planet earth; talk about unexpected alies!
As Ive said so many times before with every other book from Mark Tufo you could read this as a stand alone book; but if you start from Book 1 and read through to here you will enjoy it so much more.
If you've never read a Tufo book go grab book 1 and let me know what you think; I'm sure you will be as hooked as I was.

Indian Hill 3; Conquest by Mark Tufo Book review

Blurb
And so the end begins . . . Mike joins forces with an unlikely alliance in a desperate attempt to head off humanity's mass extinction.

I have to admit Indian Hill is yet another series of books that Im completely hooked on...jeeze...I never expected to love another series like Zombie Fallout; but here I am just this minute finished Book 3 in the Indian Fallout series and Im already reaching for book 4...NEED more hours in a day...got to wait till tonight now...sigh!

As Ive said with all my Mark Tufo books Ive read so far if you love this author just buy the damn book you don't need to read my review, you know your gona love Mike and his ways.
Alot of book series start to flag by book 3...but not Mark's...he's just takes off in another direction like a firework before it explodes into another compelling, gripping, heart pounding direction. Each and every book takes you away from reality as you get so engrossed.

Conquest follows on straight from book 2 with help coming from his new friend Dee who I absolutely adore and I have love how Dee's character has grown and how close they have become; at his human sarcasm the gradual learning process has made him as likable as Mike. How hard must it be to make alien beings believable and better still relatable within a book...well Mark does it perfectly with his fantastic description of their physical crocodillian features and movements that makes them real, the way they smile etc.

Book 3 spends more time in protecting the secret location of Indian Hill and finding how to stop the alien onslaught with Mike's idea and genius twist. I simply cannot say anymore without giving too much away you so need to read this from book 1. Its a fast paced addictive read you cant put down and a heart pounding fight for survival that has so many twists and turns it will keep you turning those pages.

Beth makes a big play throughout the storyline for Mike and I really dislike her now as I was so mad with her at the end of Book 2,  I could have slapped her; but we all know who Mike truly loves if you've read Zombie Fallout.

If you haven't read Indian Hill 1 and 2 I feel you would appreciate this one alot more if you understood the build up and where and why Mike has got to where he has.
Book 4 I cant wait to read so Ill be back to tell you more in a few days.
